Dallas is known for building huge things, like the new Dallas Cowboy Stadium, but 30 year ago, it was for something other then sports that the folks in Dallas decided to spend their money on. It was for the arts.

In 1979, voters in Dallas agreed to a bond issue that would help finance the refurbishing of an area to the north and west of downtown. Five years later in 1984 Dallas Art Museum moved into the area. Five years after that came the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The most recent addition to the area is the Dallas AT&T Center for the Performing Arts. It houses the Winspear Opera House along with theatres and outdoor performance areas. For travelers who relish the arts the Arts District is a banquet. You can get tickets to performances at these venues online or through your hotel.

Also in the Dallas Arts district, you’ll find the Nasher Sculpture Center, which highlights modern and contemporary sculpture, and the Trammell Crow Center and Crow Collection of Asian Art.

However, the designing and expansion of the Arts District is far from over. Just to the north and west of the district is a highway that cuts it off from the growing and renovating Uptown neighborhood, with all its upscale hotels and nightlife and restaurants. But that is changing. Construction has begun on a park that will link the two areas and will cover the Woodall Rodgers Freeway. The five-acre park will have a restaurant, walking trails, a dog park, a performance pavilion and playground. It is expected to be finished in 2012.

The Arts District was just a dream 30 years ago, but today it is all grown up. The Arts District has helped spur development nearby and continues to do so. Dallas voters made a good deal back in 1979.

The Arts District is a nice place to visit if you come to Dallas. The many museums and other venues are within walking distance of each other. It is close to downtown and its many hotels and many of the other sights you’ll want to take in. It is also near the West End Historic District and Dealey Plaza, the site of the Kennedy Assassination.
